Youths have staged protests in Kitale town demanding reinstating of lawmaker Caleb Amisi of Saboti constituency to the the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) in the National Assembly.
In a flash protests held on Thursday, March 13, the youths faulted the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Party leader Raila Odinga for the removal of the vocal ODM member of parliament (MP).
However, police officers managed to scatter the youths who had lit tires at the Central Business Center (CBD) roundabout, which had started to affect transport in town, but the police officers disbursed the regrouping youths, before things escalated.
After the union between President William Ruto and Raila Odinga, the National Assembly has experienced a massive change in leadership, with ODM MPs taking major committee leadership from their Kenya Kwanza colleagues.
Amisi was a member in the PAC, as well as the Defense committee. However, the MP is not the only in the latest trims after the signing of Joint Framework, Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro was also removed from the budget and appropriation committee, and replaced by ODM MP Samuel Atandi of Alego Usonga.
Allies of former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua have also been removed from crucial committees, being replaced by Azimio MPs and Ruto’s close allies. Mumias East MP Peter Salasya had also decried from being moved the agriculture committee from regional development.
Seme MP James Nyikal has been elected as the chairman of the health committee unopposed, with his counterpart from Chuka Igambang’ombe Patrick Munene will deputise him in the health committee. Nyikal has taken over from Endebess MP Robert Pukose, who was the chair, has been moved to Budget and Appropriations Committee.
Kabondo Kasipul MP Eve Obara has also been elected as the vice chairperson of the National Assembly Committee, under Julius Melly who has retained the chairmanship. From the new changes, Raila is the man of the day, with crucial committees in parliament given to his men, an indicator that he is in government, according to his critics.
Gachagua allies in the Senate, also did not jump the axe, with senators Karungo Thang’wa, Lenku Seki, James Murango and John Nyutu were also axed from their committees, and replaced by Ruto and Raila allies.
