Authorities in Ugenya Sub-County, Siaya, have today banned ‘Disco Matanga’ events night dances held during funerals due to an increase in crime associated with these gatherings.

Ann Ojwando, the Ukwala Assistant County Commissioner, stated that these events have led to insecurity, resulting in early pregnancies, theft, violence, and a rise in HIV/AIDS cases, as criminals take advantage of the noise and chaos.

“I urge the community to cease hosting disco matanga events. These gatherings have led to early pregnancies, livestock theft, higher crime rates, and a rise in HIV/AIDS cases,” Ojwando said, advising residents to hold any fundraising activities during the day rather than at night.

Ojwando urged the community to stop hosting these events and recommended holding fundraising activities during the day instead of at night. She warned that strict measures will be taken against individuals and service providers who support these events. Residents are advised to obtain permits for any gatherings and keep them between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.

“Criminals use the noise from disco matangas as a shield to block roads and rob residents. We will take serious action against anyone allowing disco matangas at their homes or providing services for such gatherings,” she stated firmly.

Additionally, Ojwando addressed illegal alcohol brewing in the area, noting that while some brewers have stopped following community discussions, those who continue will face legal action.
