Embakasi East Member of Parliament Hon. Paul Ongili alias Babu Owino has written to Tanzanian president Samia Suluhu demanding answers over his detention in the neighbouring country when he visited last year.
Babu wants Suluhu to explain to the people of Embakasi East and Kenyans why her government detained him for 3 hours at Julius Nyerere International AirPort, while claiming that when Suluhu comes to Kenya, she is welcomed yet that is not reciprocated.
In a letter dated February 3, 2024 to Suluhu through Tanzanian Ambassador to Kenya, Babu claimed that despite having fundamental rights to access Tanzania as an EALA MP, his passport was denied by the immigration officers.
“I write to bring to your attention that when I recently visited Tanzania in December 2024, upon arrival at the airport in Dar es Salaam, rejected my passport and casually informed me that I am on the list of persona non grata in Tanzania. In total violations of my rights to freedom of movement, they detained me for some time at Julius Nyerere International Airport,” read part of the statement.
The MP, therefore, requests that Suluhu responds to why he was denied access to attend to his purposes in Tanzania.
“Therefore, I am placing this special request to your office to appraise me in writing on the reasons why I am not allowed to enter into Tanzania for business, or as a representative of the people of Kenya or as a friend of the people of Tanzania and for any other legitimate reasons,” continued the letter
