Learners in Rongo sub county, Migori County, have been called upon to embrace a reading culture that would empower them to be effective communicators.
In a press statement dated Friday, January 24, Kenya Youth Project Initiative (KEYOPI) national coordinator Richard Bonyo, while donating books to Qwetu Mashinani CBO Library Project at Opapo comprehensive school in Rongo, said that today’s digital age, has suppressed the reading culture, as children focus on social media.
“This trend has resulted in too much reliance on social media, especially among the college students, who rely heavily on unverified online sources, as well as tools like Artificial intelligence (AI) for their academic work,” Bonyo stated.
According to him, the digital era has killed critical thinking, which is nurtured by reading books and novels, as it requires a student to analyze the text, thus developing ones critical and creative thinking.
“The emphasis is on online learning in the education system. This has undermined the development of essential thinking habits fostered through reading,” he explained.
The book project, his idea has received collaboration from Bishop Daniel Ochieng and Duncan Rachuonyo, receiving 500 assorted books, with plans to provide additional 500 books in future.
“This project reflects a broader commitment to embracing knowledge acquisition through reading. As we all know, an enabling environment are crucial for nurturing a love for learning,” Bonyo added.
Since 2018, KEYOPI has made significant contributions, by distributing over 417,000 books and supporting various educational initiatives across the country.
“Today marks the launch of Qwetu library, a commendable initiative by QWETU CBO, that aligns with efforts from Rongo university, and Kenya’s reading and writing culture, led by Dr Peris Siamantha. This collaboration aims to ensure wider access to books and reading materials across Kenya, fostering a generation of avid readers among children,” Bonyo further stated.
The initiative is driven by the theme: “Readers are Leaders, but Excellent Leaders are Readers who never cease to Read.
