Protus Wechuli, famously known as Misheveve Chief hilariously narrated the humble background of 800m Olympic gold medalist Emmanuel Wanyonyi.

Wechuli was speaking during the thanksgiving ceremony of the athlete held in Kaptretwa in Saboti constituency on Monday, December 30, 2024. Wechuli recounted his first encounter with Wanyonyi, in poorly dressed school uniform, as he was on duty asking parents to take their children to school.

“Wanyonyi was a cow herder here in Sukwa. I met him with a tarted short and asked him to go to school as my duty as the area’s chief. He was discovered by Mr. Kwanusu despite being a herder, he remained focus in his studies,” he narrated.

Further cracking the ribs of the guests including Trans Nzoia governor George Natembeya, Chief Misheveve said the athlete received blessings from his father before breathing his last, and asked the devil to forgive him if he is lying.

” Wanyonyi received blessings from his father named Makhesei, he handed him sports shoes after seeing his frame and his posture before breathing his last. Kama mimi nasema uongo, shetani anisamehe,” he said.

He ended his speech with a strong message of advice to the youths, in reference to Wanyonyi’s struggle to becoming world’s youngest 800M record holder in the 2024 Paris Olympic games.

He asked youths not to be afraid of failure, as it is a pathway to success and building up ones lifetime achievement, as marked by greatest men and women in the world.

“I will leave you with three words, first if you have a clearly defined goal in life, a permanent motive and purpose, your will power will urge you to achieve it in despite of setbacks and difficulties, all great men in history who tried to do anything great, faced great opposition and criticism and in finality, we often try what we will do, by finding out what we cannot do,” he said.
