Kisumu West Member of Parliament, Rosa Akinyi Buyu, has taken decisive steps to address the escalating insecurity in her constituency by securing Sh20 million to complete the second phase of the Kisumu West Police Headquarters. This funding, raised through her political influence, aims to enhance security infrastructure and bolster efforts to curb increasing criminal activities in the region.
Speaking at a public forum in Korando A and B at the Rainbow Chief’s Camp on Monday, Buyu expressed deep concern over the recent surge in crime, which has resulted in the loss of several lives and left residents living in fear. She particularly highlighted the vulnerability of small traders at Otonglo Market, who have been frequent targets of armed robbers who steal money and mobile phones as they return home at night.
Buyu assured the residents that immediate action was being taken, emphasizing that the completion of the police headquarters was critical to the fight against crime. “Insecurity has reached alarming levels, and we must act swiftly to ensure the safety of our people. I have also personally funded the purchase of a patrol vehicle, which will be used by our security officers to carry out night patrols and deter criminals,” she stated.
The MP praised the efforts of local law enforcement, particularly the area’s Officer Commanding Station (OCS), Mr. Juma, for their ongoing work to combat the criminal gangs terrorizing the community. She called for greater collaboration between the police and residents to ensure lasting peace in the area.
During the meeting, the OCS urged community members, particularly those from the two villages, to take an active role in discouraging youth involvement in criminal activities. He stressed the importance of community vigilance to prevent further criminal behavior.
Chief Simon Osege of Central Kisumu location also lauded the MP’s initiative, noting that the project had come at a critical time. He expressed confidence that once the police headquarters is operational, it will significantly reduce the current insecurity challenges facing the area. “This is a much-needed security intervention that will help restore peace and safety to the community,” Osege remarked.
The allocation of Sh20 million for the police headquarters is part of a broader strategy by Buyu to improve security infrastructure and support local law enforcement in combating crime. The completion of this project is expected to play a pivotal role in securing Kisumu West, particularly in curbing the growing trend of violent robberies and gang-related violence.
