An 18-year-old girl is receiving treatment at Migori Level Four Hospital after reportedly being assaulted by her boyfriend in Suna East, Migori County. The alleged attack, which has sparked renewed outrage over gender-based violence, occurred during a domestic dispute.

The suspect, identified as David Odhiambo, a bodaboda rider, allegedly stabbed the victim in a public area before fleeing the scene. Ngege Sub-location Assistant Chief Celine Anyango confirmed the incident, describing the attack as unprovoked and deeply alarming. “This unfortunate incident highlights the growing concern of violence against women in our community, and swift action must be taken,” Anyango said.

Witnesses reported that the assault took place in broad daylight, leaving residents shocked by its brutality. Many locals called for urgent action to address rising cases of gender-based violence (GBV) in the region and to ensure justice for the victim.

Following the attack, the young woman was rushed to Migori Level Four Hospital, where medical personnel are providing care. Doctors have described her condition as serious but stable, stating that she remains under close observation as she recovers.

The incident has ignited calls for justice from local leaders and gender rights activists, who emphasized the urgent need for decisive measures to combat GBV. “This case is yet another indication that violence against women continues to rise. We need stricter enforcement of laws and more support for survivors,” said Beatrice Ochieng, a women’s rights advocate in Migori.

Police have launched a manhunt for the suspect, David Odhiambo, who disappeared after the attack. Authorities are appealing to the public for information on his whereabouts, encouraging anyone with knowledge to report to the nearest police station. “We are actively pursuing the suspect, and we urge anyone who has seen him to come forward,” said Migori County Police Commander, adding that justice will be served swiftly.

Rising cases of gender-based violence have become a national concern in Kenya, with incidents like this reflecting the need for urgent societal intervention. Statistics show a worrying trend of violence, particularly against young women, prompting calls for both preventive and responsive measures.

Activists argue that tackling GBV requires a multi-faceted approach, including legal reforms, public education campaigns, and increased support for survivors. “Communities must unite to reject violence in all its forms. Education, awareness, and empowering women to speak out are key to eradicating such injustices,” added Ochieng.

The government has previously pledged to address GBV through policy initiatives, but many believe these efforts need to be strengthened at both community and national levels. Empowering law enforcement agencies, allocating resources for survivors, and implementing community-based interventions are seen as critical steps in combating violence.

This case serves as a stark reminder of the need for vigilance and collective action to protect vulnerable individuals. Residents in Migori County have joined activists in urging authorities to ensure justice is served for the young woman and to work towards preventing similar incidents in the future.

As the search for the suspect continues, the community is being encouraged to support survivors of gender-based violence and report any incidents to the relevant authorities. Through collective efforts, society can foster safer spaces where women and girls feel protected and empowered.

The assault of the 18-year-old girl in Migori highlights the urgent need to address gender-based violence. Swift justice, public awareness, and long-term strategies remain critical in tackling this societal challenge and ensuring that such violence is not tolerated.
