Senior Advisor at the State House in the Council of Economic Advisors, Hon. Moses Kuria has enunciated that he is worried about the job market as a large number of Kenyans is graduating from various universities across the country.
Moses Kuria while accompanying former Prime Minister Raila Odinga to the 20th Graduation Ceremony at Kabarak University, said that more than 2500 students are graduated from Kabarak University as other hundreds of thousands also graduate from technical and vocational institutions yet there are no readily available jobs to absorb them.
“Over 2,500 students graduated today, just like hundreds of thousands of students in all Universities not to mention TVETs and other tertiary institutions. They need jobs and this can not wait,” said Kuria.
The former Gatundu South MP reiterated the need and urgency in addressing challenges graduates face while looking for jobs, to quench their thirst after spending years in campuses. Kuria heightened that leaders should be perturbed by this and put their minds to work, in order to resolve this perennial challenge.
“Yet another reminder of how urgent and immediate the challenges of job creation are. We need all hands on deck,” noted Kuria.
Raila Odinga who was the chief guest of the graduation ceremony, also echoed on Kuria’s sentiments, confirming that the country is indeed at a crisis, in ensuring there are available jobs.
“To the graduates; we release you into society at a time of monumental challenges in our country and around the world,” said Odinga.
While acknowledging the achievements of the graduates, Odinga affirmed to them that it is their right to be provided with job opportunities, in order to help them secure a living for them and their families.
“As young people, you have the right to demand of your country an opportunity to make an honest living; an environment that will enable you start and bring up stable and prosperous families and that an environment be created that ensures you will not be stuck in the struggles of your parents and will instead do better,” said Odinga.
However, Odinga urged them to strive and be the future of the country, despite the challenges they face. He confirmed his trust in them, while confirming that the knowledge they have acquired from the university cannot be suppressed.
“This university has planted in you the free, inquiring minds and restless intellects and spirits that cannot be subdued. Therefore in you, we have the best insurance for our nation’s future, regardless of the circumstances of today,” urged the leader.
“Now go out and change Kenya for the better forever!” He added.
The ceremony was presided over by the Chancellor of the institution, Gideon Moi.
