A high-level forum addressing critical issues affecting youth in Migori County—HIV/AIDS, teenage pregnancy, and early marriages—wrapped up today with a renewed commitment to tackle these challenges head-on.
The three-day event, held from December 2 to December 4, also raised concerns over rising drug and substance abuse, which has been linked to an increase in gender-based violence (GBV) cases.
Organized under the Kambi ya Vijana initiative, the forum was spearheaded by Migori’s First Lady, Mama Agnes Ochillo, through the Mama Agnes Ochillo Foundation. The initiative seeks to empower young people by addressing socio-economic challenges and promoting sustainable solutions.
Addressing participants, Mama Ochillo stressed the importance of collective responsibility in safeguarding the well-being of young people. “The youth are the beacon of hope and future leaders of this county. It is our shared duty to protect and empower them,” she said.
The forum brought together key stakeholders, including government officials, healthcare professionals, educators, and youth representatives.
Discussions focused on practical interventions such as youth empowerment, education, mentorship programs, and expanding access to health and social services.
Dr. Betty Samburu, one of the prominent speakers, highlighted the need for safe spaces where young people can express themselves freely. “We need environments that allow youth to voice their concerns openly and without fear,” she remarked.
As the forum concluded, stakeholders pledged to implement actionable strategies aimed at reducing the prevalence of HIV/AIDS, teenage pregnancies, and early marriages in Migori County.
The event reinforced the county’s commitment to creating a safer and more supportive environment for its youth.
