Migori Senator Eddy Gicheru Oketch has written to the Speaker of the Senate, asking for investigations into breach of data privacy by communications service provider Safaricom.

In the letter, the Senator wants the Senate Committee to find out whether Safaricom has a data sharing agreement with the government.

He also asked the house to conduct investigations to ascertain whether Safaricom has a right to collect and store subscriber’s data such as locations.

Eddy also outlined that the house needs to confirm why only Safaricom has the right, if it’s true, to keep subscriber’s data and not other service providers.

The lawmaker went ahead asking the Senate to confirm measures the service provider takes to safeguard its clients while sharing data to a third party.

He additionally wants to know why it is only Safaricom that has a high number of cases of breach of data privacy as compared to other service providers.

The Migori leader also wants the house to confirm the truth in the rumours that Safaricom lines are being installed by an international company called Neural Technologies. He went further asking the house to ascertain if there is an agreement between the two said companies.

This letter comes in light to recent accusations that Safaricom has been providing data of Kenyans to the government. This has consequently led to abductions, torture and extrajudicial killings of Kenyans who have been questioning the Government.

Popular Government Critic, Maverick Aoko has been missing for the past one week and her whereabouts remain in limbo. Human rights activist Boniface Mwangi was also abducted some days ago, only to be released a day after.
