Governor James Orengo Joins Fishermen in Celebrating World Fisheries Day in Siaya

As the world commemorates the World Fisheries Day, Siaya County was not left behind. Led by Siaya Governor James Orengo, the county celebrated the event at Lwanda K’Otieno Beach in South Uyoma Ward, with a focus on highlighting fishing as the main economic activities in the region.

The Governor confirmed the county government’s commitment in supporting fishing in the county.

He said that his government has supported this sector by prioritizing and developing fish and fish products value chain through the provision of essential fishing equipment, fingerlings, fish feeds, cooler boxes, and patrol boats to local fishermen.

In further improving the sector, Orengo announced the leasing of the Luanda K’Otieno Mini Fish Processing Plant to Vemric Fish Processors, which is anticipated to enhance market access and bring substantial benefits to the local community.

“On the sidelines of the event, I had the distinguished honour and privilege of witnessing the leasing of the Luanda K’Otieno Mini Fish Processing Plant to Vemric Fish Processors,” the Governor said.

Also to witness and commemorate the great day, was George Otuoma, Chairman of the Beach Management Unit at Lwanda K’Otieno, who emphasized the importance of cooperation with coast guards to ensure sustainable fishing practices.

In response to past grievances from fishermen, Rarieda MP Otiende Amolo, also in attendance, confirmed that efforts have been made to ensure coast guard personnel provide protection without financial exploitation.

The occasion was also graced by Nyanza Regional Commissioner, Flora Mworia who stated that addressing complaints raised by fishermen is crucial for promoting effective fishing practices in Lake Victoria.

The event also embraced Deputy Chief of Staff in the Executive Office of the President, Hon. Eliud Owalo, PS Ministry of Mining Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs, Betty Njagi, among other dignitaries.

Betty Njagi in her address,  acknowledged that establishing cooperation with coast guards is essential for implementing protective measures for fishermen.

This event marked a significant step towards enhancing sustainable fishing practices and supporting the local economy.

It also aimed at raising awareness about sustainable fishing practices and encouraged fishermen to adopt responsible methods in Lake Victoria.
