Siaya Governor H.E James Orengo has condemned the alleged abduction of Ugandan opposition leader, Kizza Besigye in Nairobi.

In a statement, Orengo has claimed that despite entering to Kenya lawfully Besigye was driven back to Uganda against his will.

The governor criticised the use of government security in aiding such action to a leader who did not come as a fugitive to the country.

“Mr. Besigye did not come to Kenya as a fugitive. The most disturbing question in this saga is that the abduction was carried out by elements of Kenya’s security ogans. And if that was not so then it would raise fundamental questions about the ability and the authority of our security agencies,” read part of the statement.

According to recent updates, Besigye has been charged before court martial with plotting to attack military targets in Uganda, and illegal possession of 2 pistols in Kenya and has been locked up at Luzira Prison until December 2, 2024.

In reference to this, the Siaya Governor has urged the Kenyan government to demand for the immediate release of the Ugandan opposition leader, citing framework of the law that establishes clear circumstances of arrests and detention

“ The Kenyan Government must demand the immediate release of Mr. Besigye until the circumstances of the abduction is established and determined because there is a framework in our laws that could have been invoked in compliance with the dictates of the rule of law and democratic principles,” continued the statement.

Orengo went further arguing that the abduction compromised the principles and values of the Constitution of Kenya 2010 and and revealed the nature of the state in Kenya.

He went ahead outlining that the country must decide to rule under democracy or choose tyranny, if it feels so.

Kizza Besigye as according to his family, Dr. Besigye was abducted on Saturday in Nairobi and was suspectedly detained by the Ugandan military detention.

The leader was in Kenya to attend a book launch organized by NARC-Kenya party leader and Senior Counsel, Martha Karua.
