Kisumu West Deputy County Commissioner Mr Wanyonyi Nalianya has warned that stern legal action will be taken against those engaging in gambling business in Kisumu West Sub county.

Speaking during the Jamhuri Day celebration that was held at Wachara mixed secondary school yesterday, Nalianya expressed concern saying that majority of the gamblers are young boys with no means of getting the money for gambling.

The DCC said a crackdown will be carried out by a team of the law enforcement officers in Kisumu West Sub county to ensure that the gambling business he emphasized has reached an alarming level in the sub county is eradicated once and for all.

He at the same time expressed concerns saying there was a possibility of the boys engaging in gambling to start stealing money from their parents so that they can spend the same on gambling.

“Unless prompt action is taken to stop our young boys from engaging in gambling business, there is a likelihood of them turning into hardcore criminals,” he said.

Kisumu West OCPD Mr Bernard Musyoki Ngungu who had also attended the auspicious occasion on his part expressed concerns over rising brewing and consumption of illicit brews in Dago area, which has become notorious for the brewing of chang’aa.

“Reports have reached my office that Dago has become notorious for Chang”aa brewing and consumption, but I will do everything at my disposal to ensure this illegal activity is stopped once and for all,” he said.

The OCPD, said that disco matanga has been banned with immediate effect and any homestead that would defy the directive will face the full force force of the law.

“It is during disco matanga that our young girls get spoiled through early pregnancy and even contracting HIV and AIDS hence ending up dropping out of school so am urging parents to protect their girls during the approaching Christmas festivities,” he said.

In order to eradicate this, the OCPD urged all the chiefs and their assistants in the entire sub county to ensure that there is no disco matanga in their areas of jurisdiction.

“This activity can be stopped, so I would want to urge chiefs and their assistants to enforce the directive so that we can be able to protect our young girls from abuse,” said the OCPD.

Kisumu West Maendeleo ya Wanawake chairperson Margaret Omedo on her part expressed happiness noting that the two-thirds gender rule has enabled the women to hold positions of leadership alongside men who had initially been suppressing the women by denying them the opportunity to vie for any elective slots.

“I am proud that the two-thirds gender rule that has been entrenched in the Constitution has empowered the women such that they can compete with men in elective seats,” she said.

She said that she would use her position to protect women in the sub county from any form of abuse.
