Ethics Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) arrested two students in Kakamega on Monday, January 27, posing as EACC Directors.
In a statement by the commission, the two have been conning public officers and residents of the larger Western Region, with intend of possible forgiveness for corrupt cases.
Tobias Singila Wekesa and Sharon Nanjala Anyango, are believed to be university students, sourcing huge sums of money from residents, promising them forgiveness by the commission.
“EACC has arrested two suspected fraudsters who have been conning public officials and members of the public in the Western Region while pretending to be EACC directors with purported ability to ‘forgive’ corruption suspects, and stop any investigations in exchange for huge sums of money,” read the statement.
Wekesa and Anyango were arrested in Bungoma at the NG-CDF offices, where they had raided, citing they had gone for inspection. The two had issued arrest threats to the officials, if they failed to offer them bribe.
“Tobias Singila Wekesa, 23-years-old, and 26-year-old Sharon Nanjala Anyango, believed to be university students, were apprehended at an NG-CDF office they had ‘raided’ in Bungoma County, claiming to be on official duty investigating NG-CDF projects. They had demanded a bribe, threatening to sanction the officials if they didn’t comply,” EACC stated.
According to the statement, Wekesa has been posing as the commission’s Director Kakamega county, while his counterpart Anyango a senior director based in Nairobi.
“Wekesa has been deceitfully presenting himself as the Director of a fictitious “EACC Kakamega County,” while Anyango claims the title of “Director at EACC Nairobi,” Further read the statement.
The two suspects are currently in custody at Bungoma Central Police Station, pending further processing on Tuesday at the court.
Their arrest comes two weeks after the commission arrested a former ICT officer Nick Odhiambo Migot from Kisumu County over fake certificates.
Migot was accused of immersing wealth amounting to KSh 4.6 M, while working as Director of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), after unlawfully securing the job.
