The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has chosen Deputy President Kithure Kindiki as their new deputy leader, replacing Rigathi Gachagua. This change came after Gachagua was removed from his role as Deputy President, a decision later confirmed by the Senate. UDA leaders, including President William Ruto, stated that Gachagua could no longer perform his duties, which led to Kindiki stepping into the role to strengthen the party’s leadership.

Earlier, Japheth Nyakundi, who serves as the national treasurer of the party and as the Member of Parliament for Kitutu Chache Constituency, voiced concerns about Gachagua, accusing him of contributing to the rise of tribal politics within the party and the country. Nyakundi alleged that Gachagua has failed to demonstrate genuine interest in connecting with Kenyans from diverse regions and backgrounds, focusing instead on divisive, region-based politics. This approach, he argued, goes against the party’s foundational principles of inclusivity and national unity, which are essential for building a strong, cohesive society.

Nyakundi expressed disappointment, saying that as a high-ranking official, Gachagua’s influence and actions should ideally inspire a sense of togetherness and shared purpose among Kenyans. Instead, Nyakundi claimed that Gachagua’s actions reflect a lack of commitment to these ideals, undermining the party’s credibility and purpose. He emphasised that what the country needs now more than ever are leaders who actively work to bridge divides and promote unity across different communities, cultures, and regions.

Furthermore, Nyakundi questioned Gachagua’s suitability for a continued role within the party’s top leadership. He cited that Gachagua was previously found unfit for the office of the deputy president due to charges of gross misconduct and other serious accusations. Given these allegations, Nyakundi argued that Gachagua’s place in the party’s leadership should be reconsidered, as his actions could jeopardise the party’s mission to foster unity and progress across the nation.

DP Kindiki expressed his commitment to serve faithfully in his new role, highlighting that the party will work closely with other institutions to tackle both party and national issues. He assured everyone that he fully supports the values and principles of the party, promising to collaborate with all established party structures to strengthen its performance.

The Deputy President, now stepping into the position of Deputy Party Leader, pointed out that he is taking on this responsibility at a critical time for the country. He emphasized that the UDA party is committed to unity for all Kenyans, regardless of their background or differences. He mentioned ongoing discussions about Kenya’s national identity and unity, reassuring everyone that the unity of the country does not threaten the various communities that make up Kenya. Being a founding member of UDA, he said he understands the importance of promoting unity and peace across the nation.
