Youths drawn from across the country have declared their support for seasoned human rights defender Dr Isaac Newton Kinity as their preferred presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.
Speaking during a press briefing held on Sunday, July 20, 2025, youth representatives said the time had come to usher in fresh leadership capable of rescuing Kenya from decades of corruption, impunity, and human rights violations.
Led by Mark Anthony Ongwae, a youth leader from Kisii County, the group criticised the recurring cycle of political leadership that, according to them, has continued to loot public resources and suppress genuine reform.
“The state of our roads is appalling, the education sector is in crisis, and the government continues to peddle lies to its citizens. As youths, we have unanimously resolved to support a man who has dedicated his life to justice in Kenya. We believe Dr Isaac Kinity is the most ideal remedy—dawa ya Kenya—for the poor governance crippling this nation,” Ongwae said.
In a phone interview with this publisher shortly after the briefing, Ongwae criticised former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang’i’s speculated presidential ambitions. He dismissed Matiang’i and other candidates—Rigathi Gachagua, Martha Karua, Kalonzo Musyoka—as part of the same old political class that has failed the country.
“Trusting them again only means more harm. We must break the cycle,” Ongwae stated.
He also called out Chief Justice Emeritus David Maraga, accusing him of selfishness for considering a presidential bid.
“Maraga served this country as Chief Justice. That should be enough. In fact, chances are high that President Ruto is behind Maraga’s bid, using him to confuse Gen Zs. But we’re wide awake this time,” Ongwae said.
Lamec Bironga, a youth leader from Migori County, echoed Ongwae’s sentiments and called on Dr Kinity to return to Kenya and officially launch his presidential campaign.
Bironga expressed deep concern over the rise in extrajudicial killings and the escalating cost of living, saying the current crop of politicians cannot be trusted to address these issues.
“It’s time we rethink who we entrust with the leadership of this country. Kenyans deserve better. The future is ours to reclaim,” he said.
The group urged Kenyan youths to register in large numbers and take an active role in shaping the country’s future through the ballot.
They called on Dr Kinity, who currently resides in Connecticut, USA, to return home and lay the groundwork for his 2027 campaign, emphasising that this marks the third time in six months that youth have publicly appealed to him to vie for the presidency.
Dr Kinity is a long-serving human rights activist and former trade unionist who fell out with President Daniel arap Moi in the 1990s. After surviving an alleged state poisoning attempt, he fled into exile—first to Uganda, then to the United States—where he has continued to criticise successive Kenyan administrations for corruption, misgovernance, and impunity.
He has written extensively on major scandals in Kenya and maintained a consistent voice against the abuse of public office, from the Moi era to President Ruto’s administration.
