As Moi University is hoping to reopen today after it was closed on 3rd October 2024 due to strike by more than 4000 of its staff over delayed salaries, joy has overridden students and alumni.
Speaking to the Nyanza Review concerning the anticipated reopening of the university, Citizen TV’s journalist Emmanuel Terer is elated and enthuastic about the new development.
Terer who graduated in the institution in 2018 said that he loves Moi University so much that he doesn’t hope anything deplorable to happen to the institution.
However, while acknowledging the steps the government has made to rekindle the institution, Terer urged that the government should at least reshuffle the leadership and appoint new ones for the revitalisation of the university.
He also affirmed that the institution can do well if parallel and diploma courses are backtracked into the system, the way it used to be, before they were scrapped off.
“ Warudishe parallel and diploma courses. Moi was public institution ikiwa na parallel students na diploma students time yetu,” stated Terer.
Albert Maloba, a former President of the institution on his X platform was felicitous of the good news, with hopes that the university will stand up strong and reclaim its lost victory.
“ I hold an unwavering belief that Moi University will rise above its challenges and reclaim its place as a distinguished center of Academic Excellence and Innovation. As former President of Moi University and a Strong Alma Mater, I remain hopeful and committed to see Moi University get better again,” wrote Maloba.
Days ago, the institution outlined a series of engagements that would involve high-level discussions between university management, union officials, and the university’s governing bodies, before its official reopening on Thursday.
On Saturday, November 2, and Monday, November 4, there were consultative meetings with UASU and KUSU.
The meetings continued on Tuesday with the unions and signing of the Return to Work Formula (RTWF) was done on Wednesday.
Albeit the university is reopening on Thursday, students are expected to report on Friday 8 November 2024.
After UASU called off their industrial strike in recent weeks, many of the university’s workers remained resolute, maintaining that their demands must be met before they returned to work.
The Eldoret based university, expected to resume its operations has produced high profile personalities, especially in the media and in the law field.
