US-based Kenyan human rights defender Dr. Isaac Newton Kinity has assured Kenyans that the planned international probe into the abductions and killings of Generation Z protesters and other citizens will hold all leaders accountable, not just President William Ruto.
Dr. Kinity, who serves on the Presidential Advisory Board of the Republican National Committee (RNC) in the United States, said the investigation will also scrutinise Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who acted as head of state on March 14, 2024, while Ruto was in Zanzibar for an East African Community meeting with Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni and Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan.
According to Kinity, the date coincided with anti-government demonstrations led by opposition leader Raila Amolo Odinga, during which several youths were killed or abducted. He further alleged that Odinga’s vehicle came under gunfire during the protests.
“The probe will not be limited to William Ruto alone but will be extended to all others responsible,” Dr. Kinity said. “Those who held executive authority on that day, including Rigathi Gachagua, must answer for what happened.”
Kinity’s remarks carry extra weight as he has become an outspoken supporter of the Gen Z movement, frequently warning against what he calls “a dangerous recycling of corrupt leadership” in Kenya. In recent weeks, the Connecticut-based activist has been trending among Kenyan youths on X (formerly Twitter), many urging him to return and contest the presidency in 2027.
A former Secretary General of the Kenya Civil Servants Union and chairman of the Kikimo Foundation for Corruption and Poverty Eradication, Dr. Kinity is a veteran critic of successive Kenyan administrations. He famously survived an assassination attempt by poisoning during the Moi era and has consistently challenged government corruption, extra-judicial killings, and human rights abuses.
The Kenyan government has not yet commented on Kinity’s claims regarding the scope of the planned probe.
