JKIA Officials Blame Media for Misinformation on Fire Incident

Officials at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) have dismissed media reports of a fire outbreak at the airport, blaming the press for misrepresenting the incident.

According to airport authorities, the fire was caused by unattended vegetation burning near the facility and was not within JKIA premises. They further claimed that the flames were likely ignited by trespassers, with investigations into the cause still ongoing.

“The reports making rounds that the airport itself was on fire are misleading. The fire was confined to an area with dry vegetation outside JKIA, not inside the airport,” an official stated.

An inside source working at the airport echoed similar sentiments, calling out the media for what they termed as exaggeration.

“You media people should stop confusing the public. I work there, and there was no fire inside the airport. The flames were from dry grass that was being cleared, and everything has been running normally since yesterday,” the source revealed.

Despite these assurances, images taken nearly 24 hours after the incident still show smoke billowing from the affected area, raising concerns about how well the situation was contained.

This incident has reignited debate over the role of the media in crisis reporting. While the press is tasked with informing the public, officials argue that alarmist reporting can cause unnecessary panic.

Experts emphasize the need for responsible journalism, ensuring accuracy while maintaining urgency in reporting such occurrences.

This is not the first time JKIA has been at the center of controversy regarding fire incidents. In August 2013, a major fire severely disrupted operations at the airport, leading to heightened safety protocols. However, officials insist that the latest event poses no threat to operations.
