Mawego National Polytechnic has received state-of-the-art aquaculture and fisheries production equipment to enhance hands-on training and equip students with industry-relevant skills.

The equipment, valued at KSh 40 million, was procured through the Young Africa Works in Kenya-TVET programme with support from the Mastercard Foundation and the Colleges and Institutes of Canada (CICan). It includes a complete production system covering hatchery, breeding, harvesting, filleting, packaging, and sales management.

State Department for Technical and Vocational Education and Training Principal Secretary, Esther Muoria, highlighted that the facility would serve as both a training hub and a production unit, supporting local businesses while contributing to food security.

“Mawego is now recognised as a Centre of Excellence, equipping youth with the skills and knowledge necessary to transform the aquaculture sector and ensure future food availability,” Dr Muoria said.

She emphasised the importance of training young people in sustainable fish farming, particularly in the lake region, to enhance nutrition and income generation.

While commissioning the facility, Dr Muoria noted that the investment would strengthen collaborations with local and international partners, fostering innovation, research, and commercialisation in the fisheries sector.

Currently, 39 students are enrolled in aquaculture training at levels three, four, and five under the Competency-Based Education and Training (CBET) system.

Mawego Principal, Dr John Abuto, expressed confidence that the facility would shift the community’s perception of fishing from a traditional practice to a viable career opportunity.
