Homa Bay deputy governor Joseph Magwanga gave 600 college and high school students KSh 5000 bursaries each, Nyandiwa Primary school in Oyugis, Homabay County.

The process which started on January 3 and 4, is a County Development Program, put in place to support the needy students by paying their school fees, and is also a way of giving back to the community.

Compared to the previous years, Homabay County has made a big progress in terms of bursary distribution, having allocated KSh2 million last year for that purpose, but increased it to KSh4 million this year.

The occasion which was graced by some of the Homabay MCA’s, including Billy Noah, West Kamagak ward MCA and Bob Obondo, Central Kasipul ward MCA.

They applauded the good work done by governor Gladys Wanga, alongside her deputy Magwanga, and promised West Kamagak residents, that they will join efforts to ensure that no student is left behind when it comes to education.

“We are making progress in our education sector, we have already constructed two ECDE classes in Nyambori and Oyugis primary, and we are planning to construct another one in Nyandiwa and others,” Billy Noah said.

The beneficiaries of the funds who applied in November, were overjoyed to find themselves among the lucky ones, because most of them have always tried applying for the Constituency Development Fund (CDF)bursary,  but have not been able to receive the funds.

“It’s an honour to receive such a gesture from our Governor. Our only plea to our County Government is to find a way to separate the high school and college beneficiaries, in order to avoid discord and ensure that all students in our county benefit equally,” One of the college students pleaded.

Parents who accompanied their children to receive their bursaries were also not left behind in acknowledging the good work of their Governor together with her team.

They promised to form an association of West Kamagak parents, teachers and students, to ensure that their children are in the front line of bursary beneficiaries, and also use it as a forum to air their views and complaints concerning the fund.

“As a student who benefited from this program today, it’s now your duty to go to school and work hard to make a better future for yourselves,”  Magwanga encouraged the students during his closing speech.
